OUR MISSION STATEMENT:
TO SAVE UNWANTED, NEGLECTED AND ABUSED DRAFT HORSES FROM GOING TO SLAUGHTER!
Whisper, saved from Missoula auction October 2016. Unhandled, 7 year old Percheron mare, falling in the hands of the kill buyer!
MEET TINY, THE FACE OF OUR RESCUE!
Tiny was deemed to head for slaughter on February 24, 2018 when we spotted him at the Billings auction and one of the kill buyers told us "I'm going to chop his head off". NO WAY!! We were going to save him, from that horrible fate! And 1450 Dollars later we did! We outbid the kill buyer and took him home! Tiny stands 18.2 hh tall and while he weighed in at 1855 pounds, he was quite a bit under weight for how tall he is! Tiny came home to the rescue with us, and we quickly realized he could barely walk. He had some stifle issues that made him lay down in the pasture for hours at a time, which is exactly why he was dumped at auction. He came from a carriage outfit in Wisconsin and he was of no use to them anymore, now that he had stifle issues. Then he was sold to a guest ranch in Montana, they couldn't keep weight on him and didn't want to deal with the stifle issues either. Now Tiny is with us. We put him on free feed hay, 12 pounds of grain a day and a joint supplement. The chiropractor came, the cranio sacral therapist and the acupuncturist worked on him. Plus lots of well deserved rest. And today, Tiny is much better! His stifle/pain issues still flare up once in a while so he'll receive either an acupuncture or PEMF treatment, or a deep tissue massage when that happens. He IS a hard keeper, which means he needs a lot of calories to keep weight on him and he is basically on free feed hay 24/7 to ensure he gets what he needs. Tiny now gets 13 pounds of grain a day and remains hard to keep weight on, especially as he grows in age! We believe him to be 19 years, maybe older! Other than that, he is a happy, 2000 pound beautiful Belgian gelding who will be living out his days at the rescue, occasionally riding and driving.
Tiny has started to visit a senior home in Hamilton/MT and is bringing lots of smiles to lots of faces. EVERYBODY LOVES TINY!
If you would like to donate towards Tiny's ongoing care and feed cost, we would greatly appreciate that!
A Bit About Our Founder
Turning Passion Into Action
Originally from Germany, I moved to the Valley in 2014 with my husband, a 26 year Army Veteran, and two children, where we live on a small farm.
Having grown up with horses, it had always been my dream to live on a farm and own a horse or two. While my heart beats for all horses, draft horses are my passion and after having been introduced to auctions and the horse slaughter business, I started to educate myself on those "practices" and soon came to realize that there is a great need for draft horses to be saved from going to slaughter and I wanted to be their voice. I have personally saved three that I call my own, two Percheron mares and a Percheron/TWH gelding.
I spent months of research about starting a rescue and particularly a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and finally at the end of 2017, with the support of my husband and two friends, 1 Horse At A Time Draft Horse Rescue was established.
My goal was to open my heart and home to those draft horses facing the ultimate end while being dumped at auction and destined to step on that slaughter truck. With the rescue, I wanted to create a safe place for them where I could rehabilitate them, evaluate and train them if needed, and ultimately find a forever home for 1 Horse At A Time!
Please join me and my team in this effort by following us on this page and supporting the cause!
1 Horse At A Time Draft Horse Rescue is a 501(c)3 Non-Profit Organization. Donations are greatly appreciated and needed and will go directly towards the horse(s) and their needs.
All donations are tax deductible!
Thank you for following us and supporting us on this journey!

Animal Rescue and Care
Our goal is to save unwanted, neglected and abused draft horses from going to slaughter. We will provide quarantine and care for them and ultimately find them a new forever home. Learn more about our work by getting in touch with us today.
With our organization’s mission always in mind, one of the first things for a new rescue is always a veterinary check. Veterinary Services is something that we take very seriously. It is important for each rescue so that we know what we are possibly dealing with and also to keep our other residents safe.
At 1 Horse At A Time Draft Horse Rescue, we are dedicated to stepping up our efforts in addressing this issue. Finding a forever home for an equine is by no means an easy feat, but through hard work and networking, we believe it is possible! We are always striving to make a difference, and invite you to learn more and lend your support.
